“Consuming Metaphors” - Alex Sapaugh

Pig & Cow sandwich sculpture

My current work is inspired by the connections we have to the food that we eat, especially regarding the injustices of the meat and dairy industry. I have developed metaphors wherein fruit and flowers equate to love and happiness, while images referring to the meat and dairy industry are linked with suffering and capitalism.

This series was developed through a process of collaging imagery and writing about the topics of connectedness and food. After building compositions, I used colored pencils to create “Cow Burger” and the “Berry Locket.” I used clay, epoxy, and acrylic paint for the Meat Sweats sculpture. I chose these mediums because they are reminiscent of childhood, and the colors are similar to the primary hues of fast food logos.
