“Beauty in Disaster” – Bridget McFerren

This body of work focuses on trauma from a recent house fire combined with feelings associated with loss of loved ones, memories and material objects. I explore the idea of “beautiful disasters” through the use of domestic objects and livings spaces representing things lost. Fauvist color schemes create a tension between dark imagery and emotive uses of color. Thick, loose paint strokes combined with dark colors suggest deterioration and pain, while pops of colors and tight renderings offer glimpses of beauty and positivity. The work is meant to leave the viewer with a hope for better days after experiencing destruction and loss.
